Canine officers and their partners have proven to be effective in locating contraband that may otherwise go undiscovered by the ordinary patrol officer. Scar is trained, but not limited to, tracking people ranging from a missing child to a wanted criminal, performing field searches for people or discarded items and evidence, building and residential searches, as well as serving as a deterrent to criminal behavior.
In April 2013, the Ostrander Police Department acquired Scar, a purebred Belgian Malinois, who has been trained at the Von Der Haus Gill Kennels in Wapakoneta, Ohio. A portion of the funds necessary to purchase Scar and train both he and his K-9 handler were obtained through private donations. It is our belief the establishment of this K-9 Team would give us another tool in our arsenal to fight, prevent and solve crimes.
If you would like to make a monetary tax deductible contribution to the Canine Unit, please make your check to the Ostrander Police Department K-9 Unit, 19 South Main Street, P.O. Box 35 Ostrander, Ohio 43061.
