The Ostrander Division of Police serves the residents of Ostrander, Ohio; an incorporated village located in the Southwest corner of Delaware County in Scioto Township. According to Wikipedia, Ostrander is .3 square miles and has a population 405. These stats were accurate as of 2000. Today, it's more likely that Ostrander is about .5 square miles and double the population. Ostrander is situated on US Route 36 in between the cities of Delaware and Marysville.
Officers respond to all calls for police service, conduct vehicle and foot patrols, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, and accident investigations. Officers serve arrest warrants and enforce court orders. Officers render assistance as needed to local EMS and fire agencies. Under mutual aid requests, officers also provide backup police protection to nearby residents, including areas of Scioto Township.
The Ostrander Division of Police operates two patrol cars, each equipped with video and audio systems, radar, laser, mobile computers with computer aided dispatching and L.E.A.D.'s service, and MARCS radio systems. Radio dispatching is provided by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and dispatch is available 24 hours a day.
All Ostrander Division of Police officers undergo a rigorous application process, background examination, and interview panel. Officers must be trained through an accredited police academy prior to being sworn as members of the division.
All Ostrander Division of Police officers receive the same training as any other police officer in the state of Ohio. Those standards are mandated by the Ohio Attorney General and the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy. All officers attend in service training and stay abreast of current law enforcement trends and legal issues.
The Ostrander Division of Police is comprised entirely of volunteers. No officer receives any form of compensation for the valuable services that they provide to the community. In fact, not only are the officers not compensated, but they must pay for their own training, and provide their own equipment and uniforms.
Since the staff is comprised entirely of volunteers, most officers have other full-time jobs that they can draw on to provide unique insight to their role as Ostrander police officers. Currently, some division officers work full time in jobs as varied as bank analysts, credit card fraud investigators, investigators for the state of Ohio, police officers in other jurisdictions, EMTs, federal police officers, private security officers, real estate agents, and truck drivers.
The residents of the Village Ostrander are served with fire protection as well as medical services. Fire protection is provided by the Scioto Township Fire Department. The Fire Department, much like the Police Department, is made up of dedicated volunteers who give their time free of charge. Medical services are provided by Delaware County Emergency Medical Services, Medic 8.
